Ever since I filled my parents’ basement with toxic fumes aged 14, I have enjoyed experimenting with chemistry. I would encourage any young scientist to do the same – experiment, that is, not force the evacuation of your home!

My role as Foreign Secretary at the Royal Society has taken me to many different countries and cultures, but the curiosity and creativity of the young people I meet is universal. And their ability to communicate good ideas about science – for example, through journals such as the Young Scientists Journal – is vital. I was honoured and delighted to speak at the 2015 conference and it is my pleasure to support the Journal as an Ambassador.

I can’t be with you today in Oxford, as I have to lecture in Paris, but I wish you an exciting and informative conference.
